Visa & Passports
Entry requirements and travel documentation guidance for international delegates attending EASR 2022 at University College Cork, 27 June – 1 July 2022.
EU & EEA Delegates
As a member of the European Union, travel to Ireland should be relatively straightforward for most delegates. EU and EEA citizens do not require a visa to enter Ireland. However, some airlines may insist on passport-only identification — a national ID card may not always be accepted at the gate. Delegates are advised to carry a valid passport to avoid any boarding issues.
The European Association for the Study of Religions brings together scholars from across the continent and beyond to foster rigorous, non-confessional inquiry into the world's religious traditions. EASR 2022 in Cork provides a multi-disciplinary forum where researchers explore themes ranging from ancient ritual practices to contemporary spiritual movements. The conference encourages dialogue across national and disciplinary boundaries, reflecting the association's commitment to advancing the academic study of religions through international collaboration. Delegates present cutting-edge research on topics such as religion and politics, sacred texts, material culture, and the relationship between faith and modernity, all within an atmosphere of scholarly exchange and mutual respect.
University College Cork offers an inspiring setting for this gathering, with its historic campus and modern facilities nestled in a vibrant city known for its rich cultural heritage. The centenary of Irish independence adds a layer of historical significance to the proceedings, inviting reflection on religion's role in shaping national identity and public life. Conference sessions take place across UCC's buildings, combining traditional architecture with contemporary amenities. The university's Department of Study of Religions plays host, drawing on Ireland's long tradition of theological and philosophical scholarship while embracing the pluralistic, comparative approach that defines the modern study of religions.
Cork itself welcomes delegates with its renowned hospitality and lively atmosphere. The city's narrow streets, lively markets, and thriving music scene offer ample opportunity for informal conversation and cultural exploration between sessions. County Cork's stunning coastline and scenic landscapes provide a beautiful backdrop for reflection and relaxation. The organisers have arranged for social events and cultural activities that allow participants to experience local traditions while building professional networks. This blend of academic intensity and warm Irish welcome creates a conference experience that is both intellectually stimulating and personally enriching, fostering connections that endure long after the final session concludes.
Travel and accommodation arrangements have been considered carefully to ensure a smooth experience for international delegates. The conference venue is accessible from Cork Airport and the city's train and bus stations, with a range of lodging options available nearby. Those travelling from outside the European Union should review entry requirements well in advance and ensure their documentation is in order. The organising committee has prepared guidance on visa applications and travel logistics to assist delegates with planning. Bursaries are available to support scholars who might otherwise face barriers to attendance, reflecting the association's commitment to broad participation and the democratisation of academic knowledge exchange across Europe and beyond.
Non-EU Delegates
Delegates from outside the European Union should verify their visa requirements well in advance of travel. Ireland's visa policy varies by country of origin. The Irish Immigration Service provides an online tool to check whether you need a visa:
